2. Summary of Romans teaching, from this perspective
• Who we are
o Conservatives, Progressives, and the Poor in Spirit
o The effect of the gospel
• What we are for, and how we are to live
o We are gifts
o To the world
o Even in our suffering
• How is it possible
o Freedom
o The Holy Spirit

17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. 19 Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice because of you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.
20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.
The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
21 Timothy, my co-worker, sends his greetings to you, as do Lucius, Jason and Sosipater, my fellow Jews.
22 I, Tertius, who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord.
23 Gaius, whose hospitality I and the whole church here enjoy, sends you his greetings.
Erastus, who is the city’s director of public works, and our brother Quartus send you their greetings.
(v24 redacted: May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.)
25 Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from faith— 27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

I. Reading (2 min)
II. Introduction (5 min: 1-5) ROMANS IN REVIEW
This is the final message on the letter to the Romans, as we cover the last 11 verses of the letter today
The church at Rome was a mixed group of Jewish and Gentile Christians
First of all, Paul wrote this letter to them so they would have a solid foundation in the gospel because he had never met them before.
Paul says this about the gospel:
o In the start of the letter (1:16), he says the gospel is ‘the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes’
So the gospel saves everyone who believes.
Now what does this word ‘salvation’ mean?
Salvation refers to our restoration to God’s original design for humans.
 Starting with the first humans who rebelled against God, we have become damaged physically (we get sick, we die), morally (we do stuff we shouldn’t and don’t do stuff we should), psychologically (we have all kinds of addictions), socially (we fight each other or treat each other as things to be used). Salvation is the restoration of all these aspects of our humanity.
Even the natural world will be restored. Natural disasters will disappear.
The gospel is the power that brings that restoration.

Here at the end, after telling us how to apply the gospel, Paul states in 16:25 that the gospel of Christ establishes us, makes us stable and firm.
Why is it important that we understand the gospel correctly?
16:17-19 tells us that false teaching causes divisions & blocks growth (causes to stumble).
V25 But if we take in the gospel fully, we will become established, strong and firm.
16:25b-26 tells us that the gospel Paul preached is grounded in the prophets of long ago, and so is reliable. Paul spent the first 9 chapters of the letter unpacking this.
So we must ground ourselves in the gospel to become established.
Secondly, Paul wrote so that the Roman Christians would overcome their cultural differences and learn to love and value one another
We know there was friction between the Jews and Gentiles because of differences in customs and values, and Paul, like Jesus wanted them to find unity in their diversity.
The gospel can bring unity within diversity; we need this in the church & in the world too.
In today’s message, we will be reviewing the book of Romans, but I’d like to do it with a different point of view.
The gospel gives us powerful answers to three basic questions about our lives:
III. Who are we? (5: 6-10)
Roughly, there are two kinds of people.
o Traditionalists, obeying tradition (伝統) and community values (伝統的な価値観).
o That tradition was thought of as morally good(道徳的(どうとくてき)に良い).
o Conscientious about following the rules
o Not open to new ideas
Jews in Roman church were like this.
o Interested in honor and personal glory (Romans 2:7)
o Open to new ideas, rationalistic
Within the church, these would be the Gentiles.
• Both groups used their group identity & their values to feel they were worthwhile people.
But what if we fail to live up to our values? E.g.
Conservative politicians who espouse family values who cheat on their wives
Progressives who champion women’s rights who are serial sexual harassers
Perhaps they are hypocrites, or perhaps they are simply weak.
But Paul points out in chapter 2 that neither group is true to its own values. Both groups do things that their consciences accuse them of being wrong.
Because it is not our values that make us good, it is what we do with our values.
And Paul, consistent with the rest of the bible, says that we are all, without exception, moral failures, and miss the mark of what God will accept.
So that is the bad news.
Now, ‘gospel’ means ‘Good News’.
The good news is this picture!
The gospel good news says that realistically, We are:
Broken, defective
In Distress, needing to be saved
This is realistic, but also hopeful. And we find love there too.
• ⇨We are (Romans 8:28-30)
o People chosen by God to be forgiven of our sins, invited into relationship with Him, and destined to be restored into the glory that he intends for us.
o Jesus is the one who has made this possible by
 his death on the cross for forgiveness of our sin,
 and his resurrection for a new life, where God would be with us and lead us and transform us.
What does that truth do for us?
It frees us from bondage to group identity
 We don’t need a group to say we are okay. We are not slaves to the demands of our community, or company, or family, or church, or set of friends, etc.
 We are not worthy because we are hardworking and conscientious about the rules.
It frees us from having to be special individuals.
We don’t need compare ourselves to others.
Who we are is based on God’s view of us, which is realistic, accepting, and hopeful.

IV.
o ⇨ Romans 12:1 Living sacrifice: a life lived before God
• Remembering God’s kindness towards us, and what we are meant to be, we are to orient our lives as worship towards God.
o ⇨ Romans 12:3-6 Individually gifted for service
Individual、everyone.
For free
For others
o ⇨ Ephesians 4:7-8,11-13
So the people with the gifts are called gifts!
Everyone: Did you know you were a gift?
You may think you are small and unimportant. Or you may think you are very talented.
But, in any case, you are God’s gift to the world.

I want to talk about gifting a little more
As Paul says, we are gifts to the church to bless it.
• But we are also gifts to society as large, for example at work
Martin Luther said that God milks cows through the milkmaid.
Or we can say, when we pray for daily bread, God uses people that are doing their work in order to answer that prayer:
The farmer, the machinery he uses (and the engineers and mechanics), the gasoline (the oil rig workers), the people who grind the flour, who bake the bread, and the truck drivers and ship’s crews, and all the sales people, and the IT people, the managers and administrators, and on and on.
So the work we do using our gifts are part of the answer God gives to the prayer ‘give us our daily bread’.
So in that way we are a gift even to the world.
The same can be said for our homes, and every other community of which we are part.
● Paul talks further about our gifting in another place.
• Paul tells us to desire the greater gifts (I Cor 12:31a).
I Cor 12:31a
• Paul tells us that desiring to be a church leader is noble (1 Tim 3:1)
• Selfish ambition, ambition that climbs on others is bad.
But the ambition to bless is noble.
Sometimes it is the witness of our patient suffering in hope that is our gift to the world.
He gave himself to God
The experience changed him; he
LEARNED obedience
• そして、十字架に付けられ死、crucified, and rose in a new form of life
AND BLESSED the world
CRUCIFORM life
Give self to God
Changed by God’s power
○ This is the model of the Christian life: we offer ourselves to God, and he works change in us, often through suffering, and we become a gift to the world
● Maybe even your patient suffering is a gift to the world, the witness of your faith and hope.

We are flawed people, but loved and accepted by God. Our destiny is glory,
o We are called to give our lives away to God, and live as a gift to the world
 Sometimes we are weak, and we feel we have nothing to give
 We struggle with sin
 We often struggle with physical, family or other problems
 Some may discourage us, or criticize us, or oppose us
Paul says two things.
Forgiven, accepted
No sub for God reqd
Nothing can separate us
• We have a choice about how we approach life.
That freedom is from Christ’s death
Continue to choose
• Chikara Power! Secondly, we are given the Holy Spirit.
• Here is a diagram of what the HS does for us: HS
VI. Conclusion (1: 17-19)
Alright, let me conclude.
Big world, always changing. Decisions every day.
Even if we live purposefully, it’s not clear which way to go.
So let’s take God’s hand and go forward. Though the world is in flux, he establishes us firmly.
And that is the final message on the book of Romans.
